There's one group of Filipinos here in Australia who have long been deserving of salute! The Filipinos engaged in the medical and health care profession - doctors, nurses, pharmacists etc. who, despite the difficulties encountered to enable them to practice their careers here in Australia [in having their qualifications recognised], have made it. They are also one group of Filipinos who have retained their inherent Filipino values and qualities, not to mention their soothing bedside manner. Having a Filipino during a hospital confinement means getting that extra blanket, that extra biscuit, that second cup of coffee out of the usual rounds. They will stop and take time out from their hectic schedule to chat and translate the doctor's gibberish diagnosis and aleviate the jitters.

They have recently banded together as the Philippine Healthcare Association or referred to as Alfred's brainchild with Ella Martirez in the helm. It was during Ella's shift when I was flat on my back at Blacktown Hospital that my bed was rolled out into the courtyard for a much needed puff of cigarette!
